Septimus 7 string Strat pickups - Zero-Hum

Presenting Kinman's new 7 String noiseless Stratocaster pickup, the Magnum Opus 'Aella' and the Magnum Opus 'Artemis'

Special introductory price per pickup for launch.  Until the Order Form is completed please Contact us to place your order .

Our Aella model has classic vintage Strat low mid scoop, a strong twang and purity and sweetness of glassy highs, it also has quite a strong output.  Generally, the sound is highly dynamic and springy with great touch sensitivity that makes rapid picking so effortless.

Aella is a Greek mythological girls name meaning 'storm wind or whirlwind'.  The name implies this pickup is capable of sonic mayhem as well as sounds of extraordinary feminine beauty ... thanks to the prevalence of intense piano-mid-tones.

Artemis is the most liberated female in mythology and our namesake model has the most liberated sound and feel.  Highly dynamic, very touch sensitive and lots of twangy piano mid-tones with nice trebles.  It is far louder than Aella and balances better with humbuckers in the same guitar.

The bigger the string the greater is the magnet pull that is exerted on it.  The B-7th is quite big but our special Alnico-K5 rod magnets have just 60% of the magnetic strength of regular Alnico-5 so string pull is minimized, as is string crash and string warble (Strat-itis) while sustain is maximized.  The sound has great clarity, not just because it's free of the clutter of 60Hz mains hum and fret rattle & buzzing notes but mainly due to our unique coil design (designed especially for the low B it's not just an ordinary coil).  Also our magnet stagger is optimized for the usual 16" fretboard radius (+ or - 2") on 7 string guitars and designed to provide exceptional string level balance across all strings, including the plain G-3rd.

Dave Cohen (RIP), founder of Equilibrium Guitars in Boston coined the phrase "Kinman pickups are not only the best noiseless but the best pickup's, period" ... and now here is our new Septimus 'S' series and these are no exception.  Come out of the dark ages with these technical and sonic Masterpieces.

The KING of noiseless and the Prince of Tone and Feel ... that's Kinman.

what powers your guitar

Introduced February-2023

US Patents  5,668,520    6,103,986    8,791,351

We incorporated our Gen-3 Magnum Opus 'TCS inhibiting technology' so the Low 'B' holds together better when picked with a sharp upstroke.  See, Strat* pickups suffer from TCS aka Torn Cone Syndrome.  It’s an unpleasant, messy shattered distortion-like sound that occurs with a strong sharp upstroke on the neck pickup in the lower register of the bottom string.  Listen to mild TCS here TCS audio clip. The only other Strat models that have our TCS inhibiting technology are the other Magnum Opus 6 string Strat models -and- our Jaguar models.

Outstanding sonic characteristics:  You will get scooped / tubular lower midrange which characterizes wonderful 60+ year old Strat pickups before they aged.  You'll also get pristine, RICH crystalline and GLASY highs and 1956 'bell' ring, exceptional presence and bite, sharp snappy dynamic thwack attack and fantastic twang full of piano mid-tones (more so when using a medium plectrum).  The Septimus series has exceptional clarity & presence in the neck position, in fact you will have rarely experienced such clarity previously, if at all.   This incredible pickup sounds better than any 7 string pickup that we have tried .... and, it's got absolute Zero-Hum.

Signal chain requirementsAny old cable won't doAs with any pickup it's a good idea to use a low capacitance cable to get the maximum incredible performance of this pickup.

Enjoyability factor on a scale of 1~10:  Twelve, with the best non-noiseless being Ten.

LoudnessModerately loud and strong, louder than our Impersonator E56 and any 7-String Strat pickup measuring 7.5K Ohms and more like the output of an SSL-5 of 13.3 to 15.5k Ohms.  However, with the extremely high magnetic efficiency of our Septimus MV we don't have to resort to over-winding to get high output and it measures more like 9.6K Ohms.

The Septimus MV is a direct replacement for standard 7 string Strat pickups and will accommodate in existing pickup cavities.  See Dimensions below.

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Best with 250k Ohm (measured minimum) volume pot.  Slightly less punch and more bright with 500k.
  • Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume but for a little more top end brightness can be 500k, 1meg or a No-Load.
  • Stock pots can actually measure as low as 175k.  Pots in our Goodbye-Soldering Harness are guaranteed to measure no less that 250k.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022uF, 63 ~ 100 volt Polyester.  Smaller uF value lessen the severity of Treble cut, higher values increase it.
  • The voltage rating of Caps is not important but 63 ~ 100 volt have thicker lead wires that result in a neater job.

Magnets spread

  • 58mm neck, 60mm middle and 62mm bridge which provides optimum string-over-magnet alignment in all three positions.
  • Suitable bridge saddle spreads:  between 62mm to 65mm E ~ B.

Magnet Staggers

  • Normal improved Stagger to suit 14" ~ 18 inch uniform radius fretboard.
  • Custom stagger to suit other fretboard radii.

Mounting hardware included

  • 2 Pan head 6-32 UNC x 18mm long mounting screws for each pickup.
  • 2 Silicon Rubber tube springs.

We highly recommend consulting the Install Guide in the 'Technical' section even if you think you know it all.  Kinmans' require a degree of specialized knowledge and sometimes there is updated info.  There is also a handy wiring diagram available.

We also highly recommend consulting the Adjust & Set-up page in the Technical section so you get the best out of your Kinman pickups.

** Alnico-K5 is a unique proprietary Alnico rod magnet developed by Kinman in 1985.  It is Alnico-5 but has 40% less string pull than Alnico-5 so sustain is longer and there is much less clatter from string crash and no Strat-itis string warble.
